What
is the point to this life? I have a very hard time believing that we
were put on this earth to serve a God of some sort... or that we were
put on this Earth to test our faith and devotion to a God so that we
may be let into Heaven, Valhalla, or whatever final destination our
faith may have for us. I have a very hard time believing that Earth
is a waiting room for another existence.... Although I do believe in
reincarnation, I believe the next life brings us here to Earth again,
not to some divine resting place where our soul is at peace, and all
is wonderful all the time.
Each day, I hear people complain about the obstacles, and challenges
that life brings to us everyday. The challenge of a relationship, the
commute to work, the pressures and stress of the work day, the emotional
lows of life.... But these challenges are what make life what it is,
otherwise life would be boring. This is why I loathe the concept of
heaven... because existence would have no substance. If everything worked
out perfectly everytime, if there were no challenges, no struggles,
no pain, and nothing but success, happiness, and simplicity, life would
be dull, drab, and pointless.

Imagine
a long journey in your car. A highway which is straight, flat, and lined
with perfect, uniform trees for hours and hours lies before you. No
curves, no bumps, no hills nor valleys, nothing but the perfect, straight
highway. Wouldn't that be the most boring drive? Would you be able to
stay awake? Would you look forward to it? What's more, if this were
the only road you ever had to drive on, would you be a skilled driver?
Of course not; it doesn't take skill to drive a car in a straight line.
Imagine if everything were black and white. No colour. No variety. Drab.
Existence on this planet is no different. Without obstacles, sharp turns,
occasional bumps, curves, colour, and variety life would be dull and
meaningless. |
Existence
is a path we travel down... there are many turns, twists, forks, hills,
and valleys. Each choice we make in life takes us in a new direction
on the path... and the further we travel, the wiser we are to become.
These curves, bumps, hills and valleys that are the obstacles and challenges
in life are there for us to learn from... to become better skilled "drivers".
We grow from these experiences, mentally, emotionally, physically and
spiritually. Benjamin Franklin said "Calm seas do not make for
skilled sailors." Such can be said about life-- you are only living
when you have experienced all spectrums, curves, paths, obstacles, and
challenges.
This
is what existence is all about. When my path through this existence
throws me an obstacle or challenge, I look forward to it. I dive in
and tackle it with both hands, eager to learn, eager to grow, and to
move forward. So...next time you think your day is hard, or that life
is hard and cruel, before you open your mouth to complain, imagine life
without it... Keep your head high, and keep moving down the path. |
